Introduction
Ashdod, a large city in southern Israel with a population of 230,000, sought to modernize its street lighting infrastructure to reduce energy consumption and pave the way for smart city applications.
The city faced challenges in managing its extensive street lighting network, which consumed significant electricity and lacked real-time control and monitoring capabilities. To address these challenges, Ashdod partnered with Tondo to deploy advanced lighting controllers across the city.
Challenges
Street lighting is a critical infrastructure component in public spaces, but it is also a major consumer of electricity, leading to high operational costs and significant carbon emissions.
Ashdod’s existing street lighting infrastructure lacked technological management, making it difficult to control, monitor, and optimize lighting across the city. The absence of data-driven insights further complicated efforts to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Solution Overview: Tondo Cloud IQ, Edge IQ Smart Lighting Controls, and LED Retrofit
LED Retrofit & Smart Controls: Ashdod converted 25,000 streetlights to energy-efficient LED lighting, each equipped with Tondo’s advanced lighting controllers.
Energy Efficiency: The combination of LED technology and Tondo’s controllers, which allow for dimming and adjusting light intensity based on actual needs, resulted in substantial energy savings.
Enhanced Management: With Tondo’s controllers, Ashdod gained real-time data and control over its street lighting system, enabling remote management, custom scenario creation, instant alerts, and efficient monitoring of repairs.
Smart City Foundation: The installation of Tondo’s controllers provided a continuous power and communication network, creating a platform for additional smart city applications such as air pollution sensors and traffic counters.
Results
Energy Savings: Ashdod reduced its electricity and energy consumption by approximately 80%, significantly lowering operational costs and reducing carbon emissions.
Improved Lighting Management: The city now uses Tondo’s management system to efficiently control its street lighting infrastructure, receiving real-time alerts and optimizing maintenance operations.
Smart City Applications: The existing streetlight infrastructure is now utilized for advanced applications, including vehicle counting sensors, further enhancing the city’s smart city capabilities.
“With Tondo’s infrastructure, we have created an AI-driven system that manages all routine maintenance independently. This system also enables us to interface with contractors regarding existing faults, and based on this information, we can further develop our vision for a smart city.” — Amir Yochai, Electrical Supervisor, Ashdod
