A New Era of Smart Lighting Control

The SC220 controller represents a new standard in smart city technology, offering municipalities and utilities a powerful, resilient, and cost-effective way to manage public lighting and connected assets. Designed to reduce energy consumption, streamline maintenance, and enhance urban safety, the SC220 is the ideal solution for cities looking to modernize their infrastructure and achieve sustainability goals.

What This Certification Means

The award of CSA, FCC, and CE certifications verifies that the SC220 meets North America’s rigorous standards for safety, environmental compliance, and wireless communication performance. These certifications are crucial for deploying advanced connected devices in urban environments where safety, compatibility, and regulatory compliance are paramount.

The certification encompasses several critical operational aspects:

Voltage Range: The SC220 has been initially certified for a 100-277VAC range, covering the primary voltage requirements of most North American lighting networks. Certification for 100-480VAC is expected shortly in a second testing phase, allowing even greater flexibility for cities.

Ingress and Impact Protection: With IP66 and IK07 ratings, the SC220 is dust-tight, water-resistant, and impact-resistant, making it highly durable in outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions.

Wireless Communication: The SC220 has passed FCC requirements, ensuring safe and interference-free operation across urban and residential areas.

Technical Highlights of the SC220

The SC220 is packed with advanced features designed to make cities smarter and more efficient:

Adaptive Lighting Control: Using AI-driven algorithms, the SC220 optimizes lighting levels based on traffic patterns, time of day, and environmental factors, reducing unnecessary energy use and enhancing public safety.

24/7 Connectivity: Equipped with Bluetooth Mesh, CATM LTE cellular at 1mbps, and optional CAT1 .bis cellular with 5mbps uplink and 10mbps downlink speeds, and multi-network cellular redundancy, the SC220 enables seamless data exchange and control, even in dense urban environments.

Advanced Surge Protection: The SC220 successfully passed internal testing for ANSI 136.2 Category B surge and transient resistance per ANSI standards, demonstrating robustness against power fluctuations and lightning strikes—a critical feature for any outdoor infrastructure. With the Phase 2 testing for 100-480VAC input voltage, Tondo expects to also certify the SC220 for ANSI 136.2 Category C surge and transient resistance – the highest transient protection category available for outdoor streetlight controls.

Meeting Today’s Smart City Needs and Tomorrow’s Demands

At Tondo, we understand that urban infrastructure must not only meet the requirements of today but also anticipate the needs of the future.

The SC220 supports a wide range of smart city applications beyond lighting, including real-time environmental monitoring, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, and public safety alerts. With its “plug-and-play” design and robust compatibility with Tondo’s Cloud IQ CMS platform, the SC220 enables cities to quickly deploy and expand smart city services, creating a foundation for a connected, data-driven future.

What’s Next for the SC220?

This certification is just the beginning. Tondo is already in the process of obtaining additional approvals to expand the SC220’s voltage range to 480VAC, ensuring it meets the needs of every city, regardless of its electrical infrastructure. Additionally, we will be seeking certification for the SC220’s CAT1 .bis option, allowing for even greater scalability for Smart City connectivity.

Tondo is also ready to certify an internal version of the new SC220 for deployment inside decorative and ornamental fixtures, a common requirement for many North American municipalities. This certification process will be streamlined due to the shared electronic components between models, ensuring that we can rapidly meet our customers’ requirements.

Conclusion

The certification of Tondo’s SC220 smart controller marks a significant milestone in our journey to provide cutting-edge, environmentally responsible solutions for smart cities. As urban areas continue to evolve, the SC220 is here to support cities with the tools they need to enhance quality of life, increase operational efficiency, and meet ambitious sustainability targets.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to expand the capabilities and certifications of the SC220. At Tondo, we’re committed to lighting the way to a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future.
