In the fast-evolving world of smart cities, efficiency and ease of use are key to the widespread adoption of new technologies.

Tondo understands this, which is why we’ve designed the Edge IQ Smart Lighting Controller to be as user-friendly as it is powerful. The installation process is a prime example of how Tondo is making smart city infrastructure more accessible to municipalities and installers alike.

A Simple Process with Auto-Configuration

The installation of the Edge IQ controller is designed to be straightforward, ensuring that even those with minimal technical experience can complete it efficiently. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Verify Receptacle Type:
    • The first step is to ensure that the socket is a standard socket – Tondo provides Edge IQ model options for ANSI/NEMA and Zhaga sockets. The included wiring diagram simplifies this task, ensuring that all necessary connections are in place for the controller to operate correctly.
    • Tondo also offers an internally-installed in-pole version of Edge IQ ideal for use with un-socketed applications such as with ornamental fixtures.
  2. Power Off the Fixture:
    • Safety is paramount, and the second step highlights this by instructing the installer to power off the lighting fixture. This prevents any electrical accidents during installation.
  3. Install the Controller on the Fixture:
    • Attaching the controller to the fixture is made easy with a clear visual guide. The image shows exactly how the controller should be mounted, minimizing the risk of installation errors.
  4. Commission the Device:
    • Field activation is simple: Activation is done through the field installer’s mobile app designed for Android-based smartphones, with a QR code provided for quick and easy setup.
    • Once physically installed, the controller automatically activates by communicating with Tondo’s Cloud IQ central management system that collects information about the light fixture, GPS location, any optional asset management data collected by the installer, and confirms the device is authorized for that customer’s system.
  5. Power on the Fixture:
    • After installation and commissioning, the fixture is powered back on, bringing the smart lighting controller online.
  6. Verify Activation:
    • The final step is to verify that the controller is active and functioning properly. This is done through the mobile app, providing immediate feedback to the installer.

Why Ease of Installation Matters

The simplicity of the Edge IQ installation process is more than just a convenience—it’s a significant factor in the adoption of smart city technologies.

Many municipalities face budget constraints and limited technical staff, making complex installations a barrier to upgrading infrastructure. By streamlining the setup process, Tondo removes these barriers, enabling faster deployment and reducing the need for specialized training.

Moreover, a simple installation process reduces the margin for error. With clear instructions and intuitive design, the Edge IQ controller minimizes the potential for mistakes, which can lead to a significant increase in project deployment costs.

Technical Excellence Meets Practical Design

Beyond its easy installation, the Edge IQ controller is built to handle a wide range of operating conditions. It supports multiple voltage levels, from 110V to 480V, and can operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to 70°C. This versatility makes it suitable for diverse environments, from cold, snowy climates to hot, arid regions.

Additionally, the controller complies with FCC regulations, CSA, and UL standards, ensuring that it does not interfere with other devices and operates within safe limits. These features underscore Tondo’s commitment to delivering reliable, high-performance products that meet rigorous safety and quality standards.

Conclusion

Tondo’s Edge IQ Smart Lighting Controller represents a significant step forward in smart city technology, not just because of its capabilities but because of its accessibility. The clear, six-step installation process ensures that cities can quickly and efficiently upgrade their lighting infrastructure, paving the way for more connected, efficient urban environments. As cities continue to evolve, solutions like the Edge IQ will be essential in making smart technology a practical reality for communities around the world.
